Benitez Boost for Reds

On Wednesday night, with Liverpool thumping Fulham 5-1 amid rumours that Rafael Benitez had signed a one-year contract extension, the cultured and amiable Spaniard replied that the only things he’d been signing were autographs for the fans who have come to respect and admire what he has done for Liverpool Football Club. Great news for Reds fans everywhere, then, that he is to put pen to paper on a new contract, said to be worth 3.75 millon a year, up from the 2.5 million he earns now. With one European Cup already in the bag and improvement in the Premiership, Benitez has quickly built up a strong bound with the fans and the people of the city. Well, the red half at any rate. It’s great that he’ll see LFC through to 2010, taking in the Capital of Culture event in 2008 and providing stability and intelligence. Rick Parry and the Liverpool board have assured him of investment funds and it remains to be seen whether US interest from the Kraft family or elsewhere will come to anything. In the meantime, the club badly needs a quality striker and faces a £180 million bill for the new stadium, so supporters will wait with interest to see what funds become available. Rafael Benitez
