The government has pledged £209 million for the construction of a toll bridge between Runcorn and Widnes, allowing detailed plans to be drawn up for the first time. Announcing the Mersey Gateway scheme funding, Transport Secretary Alistair Darling said: "The proposed new bridge would bring significant benefits to the local communities of Runcorn and Widnes, improve access to key developments such as Liverpool John Lennon Airport and help to support the continuing economic growth of Merseyside." Roy Morris, chairman of the Merseyside Partnership, said the bridge was of "massive strategic importance" to the North West.
