Wirral tops business growth league

Wirral tops the UK's business growth league table, according to research published by Royal Mail. A total of 13 of the top 20 towns and cities ranked by business growth are in the North, with Wirral posting a chart-topping 2.79 per cent increase in its business population. An estimated 69 per cent of Wirral workers are now employed in service industries in an area once dedicated to agriculture and manufacturing. Carol Undy, national chairman of small businesses, said: "The UK business landscape has changed dramatically over the last 50 years and it is great that we are seeing towns adapt to new circumstances and flourish as business centres." Manchester came 18th in the table, while London only managed 93rd place due to its relatively low growth of just 1.18 per cent.
