08 Liverpool Facts – Culture

Liverpool 08The 08 Ambassador Programme pack contains, among other things, a set of "08 cards", each with 8 facts under the headings: Attraction; Community; Face (famous people); Fact; Impact; New; Project; Reason and categorised by Culture, Business, Events, Heritage, Music, Innovation, Sport and 2008 itself. I thought I'd take one at a time, starting with Culture. Here are the 08 Culture facts:

Attraction: National Museums Liverpool is one of the world's greatest museum services. Two million visitors a year are projected by 2008.

Community: The Liverpool Comedy Festival (July) is coaching a new generation of comedians to perform alongside stars such as Johnny Vegas, Dylan Moran and Paul Merton.

Face: George Stubbs – England's most celebrated animal artist.

Fact: Liverpool has the only collection of national museums based outside London and since 2001 has seen the highest rise in attendance in the UK – 129%!

Impact: Due to record investment the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres have launched a new era of Liverpool plays.

New: A new £21million Design Academy is to be built by 2008 for students and Liverpool John Moores University's School of Art and Design – the second oldest art school in the UK.

Project: The Liverpool Culture Company with National Museums Liverpool has commissioned Ben Johnson to produce a large-scale portrait of Liverpool for 2008.

Reason: Culture judge Jeremy Isaacs said in 2003 that Liverpool could already host a year-long arts festival.
