Michael Shields’ appeal bid – ruling due today

A decision on Michael Shields' appeal bid against his imprisonment in Bulgaria for attempted murder is expected later today. The Liverpool fan was jailed for 15 years in the Bulgarian capital Sofia but has strenuously denied his involvement. Another man, Graham Sankey, has confessed in writing to the assault but Shields remains in prison. The outcome of his appeal will result in either a retrial and bail, or a reduction in the sentence. According to the BBC, his father, Michael Shields senior, said: "We are hoping to hear something today because the 30 days are up." Show your support on the Free Michael Shields website. Late Thursday update: A decision on the retrial has been delayed, according to the BBC. The length of the delay is so far unclear.
