‘Pirates’ sink Manxman refit plans

ManxmanPlans to refurbish the last remaining traditional Manx steamer have been scuppered by thieves. The Manxman, built at Cammell Laird in Birkenhead in 1955, was to have been refitted as part of a Channel 4 programme called Big Boat. The vessel would then have played its part in Liverpool's 800th anniversary next year and in the city's Capital of Culture year in 2008. But thieves ripped out copper pipework and other salvagable equipment from Manxmans's engine room and nearly capsized her at the same time. Pallion Engineering, based on the River Wear, now says that after a 5-year wait for funding which hasn't materialised it now wants to scrap the vessel. £3 million is needed for the refit and so far no lottery money or council funding has been made available.
